Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” Border Wall — April 26, 2017

Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” Border Wall

Over the course of his 18 months campaigning for the Presidency, Donald Trump traversed the country, attracting tens of thousands to his famously raucous rallies. People would wait on lines, sometimes for hours, to hear him speak.

If you watched any of these rallies, as I did, streaming online or airing on cable news, you would’ve observed that instead of a stump speech, Trump relished the riff. It was, and remains, his only actual asset: a knack for commanding room temperature.

The imposing, orange man from Queens might’ve occasionally meandered or found himself mired in fits of self-aggrandizmemt, but Trump is a shrewd reader-of-rooms. Call it intuition or skillful salesmanship, whenever he seemed to sense crowd’s mood languish, he would shift — precisely on queue, without a care segueway, he would leap unimaginable gulfs to get to his guaranteed crowd-pleaser: that stupid, fucking wall.

To be fair, you almost couldn’t blame him — his signature policy promise and a blood-boiling rallying cry; that border wall with Mexico was the hit song that the audience came to the concert to hear.*

“We’re going to do a wall; we’re going to have a big, fat beautiful door on the wall; we’re going to have people come in, but they’re going to come in legally…”
Trump the candidate made countless incendiary promises but the border wall was the heart of his campaign.

Bridgegate Updates

Remember: for more in-depth reporting and analysis, visit the +Bridgegate page on this site.

‘Til then though, here’s the gist: co-defendents Baroni and Kelly received 24 and 18 month prison sentences, respectively, for their involvement in the infamous GW Bridge lane closure scheme which brought NY-bound traffic to a grinding halt in 2013.

A jury found the pair guilty of nine federal, criminal charges late last year.

The sentences, as determined by presiding Judge Susan Wingenton, were more lenient than the 3-4 years being sought by the state but still considered severe for defendants who, after 7 weeks of a high-profile, high-stake theatrical trial, were effectively portrayed as tertiary players in a nefarious scheme hatched above their heads, if not beyond their control.

Baroni and Kelly are free on bail as they appeal their convictions.

Obits: ACHA — March 26, 2017

Obits: ACHA

The American Health Care Act, the Republican bill to “replace” Obamacare, passed (like, the “died” version) on Friday, March 24th, 2017.

In the wake of its little life, however, ACHA shed light on the incompetence of the very party who hatched it, as well as their collective disregard for constituent quality of life and cold-blooded indifference to preventable human suffering.

ACHA’s very existence — may it rest in a painful peace — revealed the real threat being posed to the existing incarnation of America’s health care system.

And so, let ACHA’s  brief, mercifuless time on here on earth invigorate our vigilance and opposition to that for which is almost stood.

Alas, as we search through the rubble and ash of its little legacy, may ACHA’s passing (again, euphemism version) remind us of the menace we face, the threat we fight.

Amen.

BREAKING NEWS

THOMAS PEREZ CHOSEN AS DNC CHAIRMAN

Mr. Perez, buoyed by activists most loyal to former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, won with 235 votes out of 435 cast on the second ballot…

After Mr. Perez’s victory was announced, Mr. Ellison’s supporters exploded in anger and drowned out the interim chairwoman, Donna Brazile, with a chant of “Party for the people, not big money!” When Mr. Perez was able to speak, he immediately called for Mr. Ellison to be named deputy chairman, delighting Mr. Ellison’s supporters.

Taking the microphone from Mr. Perez, Mr. Ellison pleaded with his fervent backers: “We don’t have the luxury to walk out of this room divided.”

In his victory speech, Mr. Perez played down what he called “the robust discussions in the Democratic Party.” “We’re all going to continue to be united in our values,” he said, calling the party’s “big tent” an asset.

Mr. Perez, 55, the son of Dominican immigrants, is the first Latino chairman of the Democratic Party.”
